The Ruawai Stopbank Trail

The Ruawai Stopbank Trail begins at the Ruawai Wharf, where there are picnic tables, parking and toilets. It comprises of 4km of flat waterfront trail heading south to the end of Simpson Road, very easy grade with room for two cyclists to ride side by side. It is suitable for all ages. Walkers and cyclists must share the trail and can either return along the stopbank or do the loop around Simpson Road and back into Ruawai.

Over a hundred years ago the Ruawai Flats were a swamp, covered in salt water every spring tide. The swamp was progressively drained by the formation of a system of stopbanks, canals and floodgates and this has created some of Northlands most fertile and productive farmland. Signs along the trail tell the story of this impressive feat of engineering and describe some of the common wildlife that may be encountered. Expansive harbour views, wide open space and tranquillity are outstanding features of this Trail.

There is cellphone coverage, the nearest Café is “The Well” in Ruawai, and the nearest Bike Shop is “Time To” in Dargaville. Enjoy!
